Amongst
the FCUM fans was Alex
Croft and his dad Les Croft who undertook a sponsored bike ride
from Manchester to Telford arriving for the Jamie Turner
benefit game. Two others Seamus and son also cycled from Manchester to Telford for this match.
See picture.
The money, raised from gate receipts, programme sales and car parking on the
day, was handed over to Jamie and wife Karen last week.
AFC Telford United chairman, Lee Carter, said “It was a fantastic day and I am
glad that Jamie and his family and friends were able to enjoy the spectacle. I
really hope the money goes some way to helping with Jamie’s healthcare. You only
have to talk to the family to understand what a struggle they have had to get
his operation done.”
AFC Telford United would like to thank all those who helped organise the day, in
particular local firm, Partnership Publishing (Wellington News), who assisted
with the costs of programme printing.

Civic Reception for the Bucks On Promotion By Abigail Price - Telford Journal July 17th 2005
Around 600 AFC Telford United fans enjoyed a civic
reception with a difference to celebrate the club’s play-off final victory that
sealed their promotion to the UniBond League premier division. Prior to the
benefit match with FC United of Manchester.
The event at Telford International Centre last week was completely different
from the traditional celebrations by most promoted clubs.
The norm on such occasions is for a team to parade through the town on an
open-top bus before taking in a behind-closed-doors reception with local
dignitaries.
But instead, Telford &Wrekin Council chose to involve the club’s fans in the
night by turning it into a giant party for the town.
Around 10 of the playing squad were present - many were unfortunately on holiday
- along with the town MP David Wright, members of Telford &Wrekin Council and
hundreds of fans.
Free tickets had been handed out to supporters and they were entertained by
youngsters from Telford Stage School, a disco and a firework display as well as
a short video chronicling their promotion season, which culminated with the 2-1
play-off final victory over Kendal on May 7.
The evening started at their New Bucks Head ground, signing autographs for
around 150 fans.
They then got on a bus and made their way to the Princess Royal Hospital to wave
to Jamie Turner, the Manchester United fan who has only recently come out
of a coma after being attacked at his team’s game with Southampton. Jamie’s son
Liam is on the books of AFC Telford.

The next port of call was Madeley Leisure Centre, where around 600 youngsters
were waiting to greet them, before continuing on to the International Centre.
“It was fantastic,” said chairman Lee Carter. “I saw that room full of people
and as I got up at the front, I was lost for words.
